Acute hepatitis E complicated by Guillain-Barre syndrome in Portugal, December 2012--a case report.

Autochthonous hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection has been increasingly reported in Europe and the United States, mostly arising from genotype 3 and less frequently genotype 4. We report here on a patient with HEV genotype 3a infection complicated by Guillain-Barré syndrome in Portugal in December 2012. We draw attention to the diagnosis of autochthonous HEV infection and to its rare, but importa...

Two Uncommon Causes of Guillain-Barré Syndrome: Hepatitis E and Japanese Encephalitis.

We are presenting two cases of Guillain-Barré syndrome where it is preceded by hepatitis E virus (HEV) and Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) infection, respectively. Our first case is a forty-three-year-old nondiabetic, nonhypertensive female who was initially diagnosed with acute HEV induced viral hepatitis and subsequently developed acute onset ascending quadriparesis with lower motor neuron ...

A Korean patient with Guillain-Barré syndrome following acute hepatitis E whose cholestasis resolved with steroid therapy

Autochthonous hepatitis E virus (HEV) is an emerging pathogen in developed countries, and several cases of acute HEV infection have been reported in South Korea. However, there have been no reports on HEV-associated Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) in Korea. We recently experienced the case of a 58-year-old Korean male with acute HEV infection after ingesting raw deer meat. Persistent cholestasis ...

Guillain-Barré syndrome due to hepatitis E.

Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is reported frequently following hepatotrophic viruses, but its occurrence due to the hepatitis A virus has been rarely reported to date. We present a case of serologically positive acute hepatitis A infection associated with GBS. There was an increased protein level in the cerebrospinal fluid and prolonged nerve conduction, with minimal axonal damage findings in e...

Guillain-Barré syndrome following hepatitis B vaccination.

A 52-year-old woman developed Guillain-Barré syndrome 10 weeks after immunization with recombinant hepatitis B vaccine. Common infectious causes of GBS were ruled out. The temporal relationship between GBS and hepatitis B virus (HBV) vaccination was suggestive of a vaccine-induced cause. The possible mechanisms of this very, rare complication are discussed.
